Butanox® M-50: The Versatile MEKP for Reliable Polyester Resin Curing

Product Overview:

Butanox® M-50 is a medium-reactive, general-purpose methyl ethyl ketone peroxide (MEKP) solution in dimethyl phthalate, renowned for its consistent performance in glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) curing systems. With a guaranteed low water content, Butanox® M-50 is ideal for curing unsaturated polyester resins in the presence of a cobalt accelerator at both room and elevated temperatures. This product is identified by CAS number 1338-23-4 and EINECS/ELINCS No. 215-661-2, and it is listed on the TSCA inventory, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.

Applications:

Butanox® M-50 is designed for the curing of unsaturated polyester resins, particularly suitable for gelcoat resins, laminating resins, lacquers, and castings. The curing system of Butanox® M-50 with a cobalt accelerator is highly effective for manufacturing light-resistant parts, contrasting the benzoyl peroxide/amine accelerator system. Thanks to its low water content and absence of polar compounds, Butanox® M-50 is highly recommended for GRP products in marine applications.

Key Specifications:

Appearance: Clear, colorless liquid
Total Active Oxygen: 8.8-9.0%

Physical Characteristics:

Density at 20°C: 1.180 g/cm³
Viscosity at 20°C: 24 mPa.s

Thermal Stability:

As an organic peroxide, Butanox® M-50 is thermally unstable and can undergo self-accelerating decomposition. The Self-Accelerating Decomposition Temperature (SADT) for Butanox® M-50 is 60°C, determined using the Heat Accumulation Storage Test, a recognized method for assessing the thermal stability of organic peroxides.

Storage Guidelines:

To maintain its quality, store Butanox® M-50 at a maximum temperature of 25°C. When stored under these conditions, the product remains within Nouryon specifications for at least six months post-delivery.

Packaging and Transport:

The standard packaging for Butanox® M-50 is a 30-liter HDPE can (Nourytainer®) containing 30 kg of peroxide solution. In the Asia Pacific region, the standard packaging is a 30-liter HDPE can for 20 kg of peroxide solution. Packaging and transport comply with international regulations, and Butanox® M-50 is classified as Organic peroxide type D; liquid; Division 5.2; UN 3105.

Safety and Handling:

Store and handle Butanox® M-50 in a dry, well-ventilated area away from heat, ignition sources, and direct sunlight. Avoid contact with reducing agents, acids, alkalis, and heavy metal compounds. Refer to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) available at nouryon.com/sds-search for detailed safety and handling information.
